Chicago Woodworking Resources

Tools, timber and supplies

This is not intended as an exhaustive list of resources in the Chicago area. These are places I know. If you would like to have a resource added to this page, please contact me.

Horigan Urban Forest Products

Honestly, I haven’t been there yet, but I’m dying to go. Skokie lumberyard focused on milling naturally felled trees from Chicago’s vast urban forests. Promotes sustainability and environmentally sound construction. From their website: “Our warehouse has of over 50,000 board feet of kiln dried lumber. Our inventory consists of local reclaimed urban lumber from ash to black walnut. We have many species that are not commercially available such as hackberry, catalpa, pear, American elm and many others. All of the logs we process come from the Chicago Land area and occasionally Milwaukee.”

Rebuilding Exchange

These are the folks who rescue our treasure from other people’s trash. Rebuilding Exchange is a non-profit organization that makes reclaimed timber and other construction and architectural items available at great prices. Think old-growth timber reclaimed from the deconstruction of 100 year old buildings. They also offer classes for all levels, do a great job of promoting the DIY and Maker movements, offer job training and are really a genuinely awesome group of people. Their website is a great source of inspiration, especially because they give shout outs to their customers who build awesome stuff, like this amazing table by Riley H. Timber.

Rockler Woodworking and Hardware

Local outlet of mail-order woodworking retailer. Leans more to power tools than hand tools. Woodcraft has a better hand-tool selection, but Rockler kills it on hardware. Their house brand gadgets, such as glue accessories, organizational products and bench cookies, are awesome. Often has great deals on hardwoods.

Woodcraft: Downer’s Grove

With the closing of the Libertyville Woodcraft in March, the Downer’s Grove location is now the only Woodcraft in Illinois. I have not visited this location, but I loved the selection and the people at the Libertyville store.
